On thomas death certificate here in NZ it states his father as Thomas Chapple and just Chapple as his mother. At the time of his death in 1925 he was 73yrs of age and had been in New Zealand 70 yrs

Sorry, Trevor, I thought I had posted the website address for the page with Thomas Chapple on!

Jax, I think that the Thomas Chapple birth registered in Lewisham could be the one baptised in Woolwich. Lewisham then covered some areas that were quite close to the RA Barracks in Woolwich. Sandy Hill (the address on the baptism) seems to be in Plumstead which was covered by Lewisham then.

But, this can't be Trevor's Thomas as this one stayed in England!

Trevor, please can you tell us what evidence you have for Thomas's DOB and father's name? Do you know his father's occupation?

There were no penalties for not registering the births before 1875 these are the only ones around that date

What infomation do you have on them? do you have the area he was born?

If he was born in 1852 and went to NZ in 1855 he will not be on any census

Trevor

Trevor Report 16 Jun 2012 03:06

Thats interesting Potty
Can u find another Thomas Chapple born round that time 1852 with father also as Thomas.

Potty

Potty Report 15 Jun 2012 13:29

The Thomas in the 1861 seems to have married Ellen Wagstaff in 1874 in Hackney - father given as Thomas Chapple, Paymaster in RA; an Ann Chapple was one of the witnesses. If your Thomas stayed in NZ, it doesn't look as if he was the one baptised in Woolwich in 1852.

Are you sure that the Thomas Chapple who went to NZ in 1855 is the son of Thomas and Ann? There is only one Thomas Chapple birth registered in the right area in 1852:

and in 1861 there is this boy:

1861 England Census
about Thomas Chapple
Name: Thomas Chapple
Age: 8
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1853
Relation: Boy On The Foundation (Boy)
Gender: Male
Where born: Woolwich, Kent, England

Civil parish: Chelsea
Ecclesiastical parish: St Jude
Town: Chelsea
County/Island: Middlesex
Country: England
ED, institution, or vessel: Royal Military Asylum

The Asylum has a website which list all the children admitted. This Thomas was admitted on 23/06/1960, his parents are shown as Thomas and Ann and he was "delivered to his uncle" on 23/06/1866. The regiment mentioned is the RA.

The Asylum was a school for the sons of regular soldiers.
