I am looking for Thomas Clary or Cleary born 1816 Mayo County Ireland not sure when he came to England but his son Thomas Cleary was born in 1851 in Glanford Brigg Lincolnshire England
Thomas Clary or Cleary named as his father but I cant find a mothers name or where they came from in Ireland we think Mayo

Hello Mavis, in your opening post you say Thomas was born 1816 in Mayo. Yet you say that in 1901 & 1911 he was 75.

Could you give us some further info on the 1901/1911 so we can take a look and then try to work back.

MarieCeleste I`ve got the same as you on the 1891 census but hes also shown on the 1901 census as being 75 as well I have tried all the census from 1841 and they are the only 2 he shows up on apart from him being mentioned on his son Thomas`s birth as being named Thomas Clary different spelling to Cleary and being born in 1816 Ireland also theres no mention of a wifes name

As someone who also has Clarys in their tree (Essex, not Lincs or Ireland) other variations I've come across are

Sometimes you have to say the word out loud, as well as allowing for regional pronounciations ;-)

Mavis, you say he's mentioned on his son's birth but there's no mention of a wife?

What birth record do you have? If it was Thomas c1851 birth certificate then it would name his mother.

Birth year is a bit out (not unusual), could this be the father's death?

on Thomas the sons birth record 1851 it says father Thomas born 1816 Ireland mother unknown.
Thomas the father is on the 1891 census as being 75 and a shepherd
but I also found him on the 1901 census again as being 75 but I cant find the notes I made
my grandfather Thomas " again"was born in 1879 so it looks like I will have to start again there
