Hi I am looking for records to follow a Annie Peacock, who left England from Liverpool and arrived in Quebec Canada 21st June 1884. She was born in 1864 and left England with a friend called Anne Easter. I am wondering if there are any Canadian websites I can hook up with to find information on her.
Regards

Just an afterthought - there is an Ancestry tree with an Annie Dorothea Peacock, born Herts 1864 and settled in Manitoba having married a J.B. Turley. . They have no record of emigration, though her parents died in England so she would most likely have emigrated as an adult. Her husband was born England but I can't see a marriage, so might be worth checking out, if you happen to have a Hertfordshire connection. Jan

I think Ann Easter's husband was Pickthorn not Peckthorn. There are 2 Pickthorn births in Manitoba with mother's name Annie Easter.

Hi Thanks for all of that. Yes it is the Hertfordshire connection as Annie Dorothy's brother is my greatgrandfather. I had made an educated guess that the 2 girls, my Annie and Annie Easter travelled together on the Parisian from Liverpool. And also what is strange is that they both married approx. 3 weeks after arriving!! Will need to investigate whether the marriages were preplanned! Anyway thanks again for your time and trouble.

Under the Dominion Lands Act, settlers were entitled to free land, specifically, a quarter section (160 acres). One did have to first file a homestead claim (with a $10 filing fee). One then had to live on the land for 3 y, erect a dwelling, and get 40 acres under crop. Variances were granted to allow brothers (as here) to, say, live on Frank's quarter section while they cleared their adjacent quarters, and then erect their dwellings in the 3rd year, say. After 3 y, they could apply for letters patent (i.e., title), which was granted once it was seen they'd satisfied the conditions.
The Dominion Land Survey covered all the prairie provinces (AB, SK, MB). The area was gridded into 1 mile x 1 mile sections. Sections were grouped into 6 x 6 township blocks. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominion_Land_Survey for the section numbering) The blocks were identified by a township # (a northing from the US border) and (usually a) westing # from some well defined meridian lines.

I've been thinking - we know from the homestead claims that Frank and Caeser were here by 1880 (so they should be on the Canadian 1881 census, even though I can't find them). It's likely that William came out with them, although he could have been in either country for the 1881 census. I didn't see a passage to Canada for them, but there was no rail link between Winnipeg and the Lakehead (now Thunder Bay) back then. There was a rail link via the Red River Valley to Chicago by Dec 1878, so they might well have travelled to the USA, and then entered Canada at Emerson, and then proceeded to Brandon via Winnipeg.
http://www.mhs.mb.ca/docs/transactions/3/eganrailway.shtml
The construction contract for the 200km line to Brandon had been let and construction begun by then, but it didn't go beyond Portage la Prairie, 80km from Winnipeg by Feb 1881 (when the CPR was formed). By the time Annie came, there was a railroad from the Lakehead to Brandon (indeed to the Rockies) via Winnipeg. There The line along the N shore of L Superior would be completed in 1885, as would the line thru the Rockies to Vancouver.

Wow!! A lot of historical data to get through. Thank you. It will take me awhile to get through it all but I have read some sections. Yes I haven't been able to track William's movements from England to Canada, I have even looked at some documents where he goes under the name of C.B. Turley.
