Please could anyone find me a family on the 1891 census, mary elizabeth hacking being the daughter, probably born in 1875 in burnley. Think she possibly had a sister called elsie, as think these two sisters married two brothers , george and robert stansfield, also from burnley . Not sure of the girls parents names at all.

p.s may be wrong about elsie and mary elizabeth being sisters as found who i think may be mary living with parents william and martha on cog lane in burnley on the 1881 census, with no sign of an elsie , who i presumed would not be that far behind mary e in age. ? Unless she was born after the 1881 census. Will check.

tHANKS CATHERINE, its looking good. But no sign of an elsie so elsie having last name of hacking must be a coincidence, or maybe she is a cousin. On the 1891 does it say that william was born in burnley and martha in broughton?

That one is a possibility although she is quite a bit younger than robert then, and marrying in blackpool? Well maybe its a second marriage for both of them. ? Will check out if robert married previously. !937 you say? And robert died in 1940 so poor thing didnt have long marriage then. OOps, just noticed i have elsie being born in 1889 in burnley aged 11 on the 1901 census in burnley. Dont have her parents down though but know she died in blackpool in 1974 aged 84, so 1889 is about right for her birth. Can you spot her parents then on the 1891 from that info, she would be approx two years old. ? Always told elsie and mary were sisters so thats wrong at least. !

Looking back at the info posted, Elsie would seem to be the daughter of Mary Elizabeth's brother James Thomas Hacking, and therefore her niece.
(OOps just noticed Andrew had already added that to his posting.)

To be absolutely sure who the Elsie from the marriage is, you would really need to buy the cert. to confirm her age at the time of marriage and her father's name.

Thats a possible, but think elsie is born definately around 1889 again in burnley, and must surely have a family connection to mary e somewhere? Have found a marriage for robert to an annie butterworth in burnley , so a second late marriage fore robert.

I have some info that james t and a jane were her parents but as no sign on the census and having seen that her death date means she was born in 1889 , will probably have to get a certificate for definate proof. But its unusual to have two elsie's unless one had previously died.? Its a conundrum. Think my sources have got some bits wrong, but they do have her death certificate. So think birth of 1889 is more or less accurate. ?

I have checked free bmd and found no sign of an elsie born around 1890 or 1889 so i am coming to conclusion date of death is wrong and the info about elsie being on the burnley census in 1901 aged 11 , which would make her also born 1890 ish, must be wrong. Unless anyone can find an elsie aged 11 on the 1901 living in burnley? strange!!

Thanks for all your help andy and catherine. Youve been great. I will go back to my sources and show them something is wrong somewhere. Just wondering how often the death certificate is wrong, as they definately say that elsie was 84 on her death in 1974 in blackpool. I have not seen the actual certificate myself, but they do have it. Will email now and ask to confirm.
