If her husband had left her with no means of support the workhouse might have been her only option

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to find my great great grandfather Frederick William Hopcroft and his family in the 1901 census. He was married to Elizabeth Ann nee Caudwell. They married in 1888 and had 2 daughters Jessie Elizabeth b1888 and Charlotte Louisa (aka Lousia Charlotte) born approx 1893. They also had a son in 1898 who died a couple of months later.
I have found Frederick in the 1911 census with his daughter Louisa, but also with another wife (Ellen) and new family. They state they have been married for 13 years! The problem with this is that I have also found the first wife Elizabeth in the workhouse in Kensington in 1911. If she was still alive then I thought he was either a bigamist or they have lied, which I think most likely as I then found a marriage for Frederick and Ellen in 1918.
My mother has told me that her grandmother’s mother Elizabeth died when they were very young, but this doesn’t seem to be the case. I haven’t found a death for Elizabeth and would like to find them in the 1901 census. Hopcroft has been misspelt so many times that I am hoping this is the case for 1901.
Apart from finding them in 1901, would anyone also be able to tell me how I can find records for inmates of the workhouse? I am wondering why she was there when she had a family. Her mother was also in the workhouse in 1911, but in Paddington.

I hope someone can help me.
