That would be why I couldn't find it! I use Ancestry - might subscribe to FMP now then too!
Thank you!

FMP is Find My Past. I was using Ancestry and cannot find that 1861 census, even with all those details supplied, so think something is missing from Ancestry.
Added: Snappish. Yes, It is not there.

There's a marriage on Family Search for James Smith and Janet Ritchie in 1850 that looks promising.

I think Jane (the step-mother) was a Bottomley. This looks like The "sister" in 1871: Marriages Mar 1859 Bottomley Martha Skipton 9a 46 Heaton Peter Skipton 9a 46
So probably: Marriages Jun 1869 BOTTOMLEY Jane Skipton 9a 56 Smith James Skipton 9a 56

If the 1871 census is the correct one, you do not know if all the children born in Yorkshire are children of Father James, or whether Jane had been married before, and some of the children took on his name for the 1871 census. So we do not know if the family were in Scotland or England for 1861. Have you applied for any other birth or marriage certificates?
Added: Births Dec 1869 Smith John Bottomley Skipton 9a 34
?? Marriages Jun 1869 BOTTOMLEY Jane Skipton 9a 56 Smith James Skipton 9a 56

Hi
I'm really struggling to trace this one!
He was born C.1854 Glasgow, Renfrewshire I've got him in the 1911 Census: 23 Parkhurst Road, Sutton, Surrey, EnglandOccupation: Retired Army Officer Lecturer Residing with wife & child His son Victor Ritchie SMITH was born in 1903 in Ely Cambridgeshire. He married Louisa Dianah ROWLANDS in Jun Qtr 1892. I think I have him in the 1871 Census: Main Street, Crosshills, Glusburn, Yorkshire, EnglandOccupation: Weftman Residing with father, step mother, siblings & half-siblings. (This census shows that his father was from Scotland and 3 children were born there, then moved to Yorkshire married and had more kids. The son James (half brother to Andrew Ritchie goes on to name one of his son's Andrew Ritchie) Its a guess at the moment - I've ordered the marriage certificate to see if it has the fathers details on.
I can't find him in the 1861, 1881, 1891 or 1901 Censuses Can anyone help?? Could it be due to him being in the Army?
Many thanks,
Katie
