PS, my bad Christina re the baptisms. It was another family branch that did a mass baptism of everyone regardless of their ages.

An interesting tidbit.
In the 1841 census, Jane Mary and Eliza Elizabeth are not at home with their parents. They would have been 3 and 5 yrs old respectively. Eliza is in the 1851 census, but not Jane. In 1861, only William and John are present, no other children (but there may have been an overlap onto another page).

This could be her burial

name: Jane Mary Smith
event type: Burial
burial date: 27 Aug 1839
burial place: Stepney, London

I wonder if Elizabeth died shortly after Alfred's birth, which is why he wasn't baptised at the time.

Wendy

Wendy Report 26 Jul 2012 10:00

Yes. John is Frederick's son from his 2nd marriage to Elizabeth Breeze.

I have him baptised 18/06/1843, but no source. I will take a look and see if I have the notes somewhere.

Maybe I was given the wrong info, as I had William born 1820.

TY Christina for that...will go hunt now.

Baptisms for St.Dunstan, Stepney

1821 - William Rigby Smith - born 26th July 1821 - Frederick and Elizabeth - cordwainer

1824 - Frederick James Smith - born 29th November 1823 - Frederick and Elizabeth - cordwainer

I think it's more likely that Eliza is the 2nd wife's child.

Where did you find the baptism for Alfred in 1843? I can't find one for him anywhere.

:-S So much for finding a simple death date LOL
Amazing how more questions are raised than answers in genealogy!

Just checked back through Frederick and the 2nd Elizabeth's children, and they were all baptised a month after their birth, so does point towards Eliza being from the first marriage, meaning as you said, Elizabeth nee Rigby died 1836-1838.
But...there is a big gap between Alfred and Eliza (9 years). Surely there would have been more children born, but none that we can find.
So I am either going to have to look for more children from 1827-1836, presume Eliza is from the first marriage and Elizabeth died 1836-1838, or presume Elizabeth died prior to 1836 and Eliza was born out of wedlock.

Interesting though that Eliza was born 1836, and baptised just a few months before her father married again in 1838.

Yes, it has all been researched in another thread.
Frederick married Elizabeth Breeze in 1838.
I have a note for Eliza Elizabeth as mother unsure.
William, Frederick and Alfred were definitely the sons of Elizabeth Rigby.
Although I don't have Frederick and William's baptism dates, Alfred was baptised in 1843, and I believe his brothers were baptised a lot later too.

The baptisms for William Rigby Smith - 1821 and
Frederick James Smith - 1823
both give parents as Frederick and Elizabeth - a cordwainer

There's another baptism
Eliza Elizabeth Smith - St.Matthew, Bethnal Green - born November 1836 - baptised 1st July 1838 - parents Frederick and Elizabeth - a cordwainer

Did Frederick marry another Elizabeth?

There's an eight year gap between Alfred and Eliza so I guess he could have.

In which case, it looks like the first Elizabeth had died by 1836.

I should think that if he re married in 1838, Elizabeth would have died shortly before that, they didnt tend to hang about in those days!

There are so many deaths in 1837 for Elizabeth Smith, it would cost a fortune to track down the correct one!

This is a new search for Elizabeth's death only. I have been unable to find anything in my search, except for the information I already have.

I am looking for the death of Elizabeth Rigby.
Born 23/11/1799 Bethnal Green
Baptised 15/12/1799, Saint Mathew, Bethnal Green
Parents Thomas and Susanna Rigby
Married Frederick Smith 21/08/1820 Saint Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney, London

Children
Wiiliam 1820
Frederick 1823
Alfred 1827

Frederick re married 17/03/1838
Therfore her death must have been between 1827 and 1838.

Also looking for surname of her mother Susanna.
I have no information regarding Thomas nor Susanna to help.

Thanks.
