According to the marr. cert., 1892, of William Wells,( b. @ Isleham around 1832), his father was Thomas Wells (deceased). After researching Thomas Wells , b. 1817 @ Isleham, It's clear that he didn't have a son, William. Can somebody please suggest another Thomas Wells?

Are you sure about the date of the marriage? Who did he marry and what was the father's occupation on the certificate (if written) please.

Thomas Wells 1917 would only have been 15 if he fathered a child in 1832 - and according to you William was 60 when he married - rather old don't you think?

Message from Joan I've been following the 1841 line, with Edward as William's father, but now find that I've been mistaken. As I say, I need a Thomas Wells of an appropriate date to be William's father. But thanks. JOan

Thank you all for your responses, some of which I have replied to directly. (should have left them 'til here and now).
The one census, 1891, which definitely includes my family has William born in Cambs. I also have 2 in which William is born in Farnham and 1 in which he is born in Isleham.
Hopefully, when I've had the time to digest Chris's info. I may be a bit clearer.

William, on most census is described as a 'gas work labourer' . In the 1871 census he is described as a 'chair caner'.
My mother used to tell me that, as a small girl, she used to go out with her grandfather on his rounds as a chair caner and knife sharpener. She was born in 1904.
In the 1891 census he is back as a lab.
So confusing!!

Interesting that I use Roots Chat but haven't seen the 1871 census you show. However, I'm a very new user and don't really know, yet, how to get the best out of it.
The 2nd 1871 census is the one I have. Lonsdale Rd. S/Be Linsdale Rd?
1901 census I have. Frederick S/Be grandson? This is backed up by the 1911 census. This I have.
Thank you Chris. I shall continue to try to find my way through the maze.
