John Reeves married Jane Oswin in London in 1855 and sometime after that they joined Jane's parents Charles and Anna Frances Oswin in Madison, Wisconsin and had 5 sons. Could anyone tell me when they emigrated please, and from which port? Many thanks.

According to Jane's 1855 marriage certificate her father was Charles Oswin, occupation surgeon. Following him rather than Jane it would appear that if indeed he did move to Winsconsin he did not remain there for very long. In the 1841 and 1851 UK census he is in London and Kent respectively and his occupation is indeed a surgeon. There is a Charles Oswen shown living in Wisconsin in the 1860 US census. The age would be correct but his occupation is shown as a farmer. There is no John or Jane Reeves indicated either living with him or nearby as far as I can see.

In1871 he is living with his son Frederick and his family in Marylebone. Charles's occupation is a surgeon. In 1881 he appears to have remarried and is still a surgeon living at North Grove Asylum" North Grove Lane, Hawkhurst, Kent. He died aged 88 on 3/3/1890 in Kent leaving his estate valued at £56/6/8d to his widow Sarah.

It seems strange that he would give up his chosen profession as a surgeon to travel to the USA to become a farmer only to return to the UK and resume his career relatively quickly.

Just to give us an idea of who we're looking for, on that 1855 marriage John Reeves was of full age and was a merchant. He lived in the parish of St Peter's Liverpool. His father was Thomas Reeves (deceased) a farmer.

Jane Oswin was a minor (with consent)

The couples eldest son appears to have been Charles Percival Reeves. According to the 1880 census he was born in Wisconsin in 1856. This would appear to be his Iowa cemetery record which indicates his actual date of birth as 3/2/1856. If that is correct and he was born in Wisconsin then his parents must have travelled to the US shortly after their marriage on 28/4/855.

Name is clearly Oswin on original.

If John Reeves a merchant could go and be a farmer in Wisconsin then I don't see why a doctor wouldn't try his hand at it (perhaps he reckoned he could tend the animals like a vet?)

Thanks so much everyone - sorry I didn't reply straight away - distracted helping daughter and son-in-law look up houses to buy! Yes, they are the right children of John and Jane Reeves, and yes, Charles Oswin did leave his job as a surgeon (actually a surgeon dentist) in Harley Street and become a farmer in Wisconsin. My cousin has a cross-written letter from Charles Oswin's wife Anna to her granddaughter back in England (my great grandmother) and the address is a farm in Madison, and she talks about the farm and the animals, and talks about the Reeves family and names all the boys. Charles then returned to England in 1869 after his wife died, but his 3 youngest children who followed them to America stayed there with their families. I'm in touch with descendants of the other two but didn't know what had happened to the Reeves family, or when they went out to America. So thank you ever so much for all this information. :-D
