Death Record for John Maskelyne

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Sarah

Sarah Report 9 Sep 2012 12:06

John Maskelyne was born circa 1836 in Mildenhall, Wiltshire. He married one of my ancestros - Eliza Mortimer. They appear on the census returns all the way up until 1891 when George is living in ogbourne st George, wiltshire while his wife Eliza is a patient in hospital in preshute, wiltshire. She died shortly after. I have not been able to find a death record for John though. There are two that I have found in Wiltshire with the same spelling as I have listed above but the birth year doesn't work out. I know it's bound to be a spelling issue but so far haven't worked out the right combination. I would appreciate any help in tracing his death record.

Tricky one :-S

Cant see anyting for him on the censuses after 1891 so maybe the above death is not him

Need to do some more more digging

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 9 Sep 2012 13:01

If his death was registered by someone who didn't really know him, the recorded age could be wrong

Gee

Gee Report 9 Sep 2012 13:01

Hang on a minute............

you said

George is living in ogbourne st George

Is it John or George we are looking for?

ErikaH Report 9 Sep 2012 13:09

In 1871 and 1891, his birth year is recorded as c1834

Have you checked to see whether he re-married after Eliza's death?

Gee

Gee Report 9 Sep 2012 13:16

There is a marriage in 1893 to either a Harriet or a Rose

Then there is this....age 10 years out but?

Sorry I ment John not George - he was living in Ogbourne st George! Whoops!

Yes I suppose it's possible his age wasn't known exactly if the person registering the death didn't know especially as Elizabeth died first and they didn't have any children plus most of John's siblings had died before 1891 except his youngest brother Henry and possibly his sister Dinah but then I would expect them to know his birth year if they registered the death?

I haven't checked for remarrying so I will have a look for that.

Ooo - I reckon that is him on the census given it states Minal as his birthplace. His birth year is definitly out by 10 years and there isn't an error in transcription like I thought there might - census definitely reads age 77 yrs. I searched 1891 census for another John Mask* born Mildenhall/Minal in case it was another John but I couldn't find one .

Gee

Gee Report 9 Sep 2012 13:31

I think the John above is your man. Mildenall is the same place as Minal!

He maybe forgot how old he was..........I know I do, but I dont 'add' on 10 years ;-)

Sarah

Sarah Report 9 Sep 2012 13:39

Yes definitly my man Gins - yes I knew Minal and Mildenhall was the same place - I wonder whether harriet completed the census return and wasn't sure of his age?

I did discount that 1929 death because his widow's name didn't match what i had for him, birth year was out plus the 1911 census shows he was born Walton on Thames, Surrey

Couldn't find John and Harriet on 1911 so they must have died by then. Found this death for harriet:

Name: Harriet Maskelyne
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1840
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1905
Age at Death: 65
Registration district: Swindon
Inferred County: Wiltshire
Volume:5a
Page:14

Gee

Gee Report 9 Sep 2012 13:43

Thats that then!

But me being extra careful, I would buy that marriage certificate for John & Harriet

Marriages Sep 1893
Masklyne John Marlbro' 5a 179
Newman Harriet Marlbro' 5a 179

:-D

Sarah Report 9 Sep 2012 14:24

I will see if I can find the marriage when I next go to Wiltshire Record Office to see if there is any information on it that links him to my man before paying out for the certificate. Still can't find a death record for him though!

Ah - I see it now Gin - I think I must have mistook it as part of your signature That one makes sense being in Swindon and where he lived - there is that 10 year discrepancy but it tallies with the latter two census returns so I think it is him. I have just re-read through the posts and noticed one that I must have missed - probably posted at same time I was posting - I see Gin you put the 1911 census on there too. Thank you very much for all your help!

Gee

Thank 'gawed' for that!
