There are no birth certs pre 1837. the best you can hope for is his baptism record ,Sometimes you can get lucky cos the vicar would record a birth date on the record but it wasnt a requirement for them to do so

Where does he give as place of birth on the census records?
Did he have any siblings that you know of?
If you have his marriage certificate, this will give you his father's name?

The 1871 posted by Catherine has him as an Agricultural Labourer and I would suggest the place of birth as Slackstead (not far from Romsey).

greyghost Report 14 Sep 2012 11:04

Have looked, can't see, my guess is badly transcribed somewhere

Edit - 2 pages of places in Romsey extra looking at the Address Search option on FMP if anyone has the time to trawl as this is the Parish they appear to be in on other census'

I think the only way forward is for Brenda to buy the Marriage cert to see what that says about his father.

Can anyone find Mary A Hall on the 1841 too as I can't even find her and am wondering if these census are missing.

Maybe, you would need to check the dads name against the marriage cert

If you've got the actual certicate, rather than just a partial transcription of it, the reason the father's name is left blank is because they didn't know it. Being of full age has nothing to do with it - in 1851, both parties were of full age in over 80% of English/Welsh marrs. If you want to see an example of a 48 y o widower marrying a 31 y o spinster where both fathers are named, see Arthur Conan Doyle's m.cert near the end at:
