Evans - Roebuck Marriage 1932

Roger Report 16 Sep 2012 16:07

Hi All,

I've hit a complete brick wall with mt wife's grandmother Annie E Roebuck. I know she was born in Rotherham And had a child in 1923 but no details of the father. The only possible clue after that is a marriage in Rotherham in Mar qtr 1932 of a Reuben E Evans to Annie E Roebuck. Would anyone out there be able to cast any light for me before I go to the expense of acquiring certificates ? Unfortunatley very few living relatives to ask.

Thanks everyone

Roger

Roger, are you saying you have found the birth of the child or not? I sort of assume it is called Roebuck, MMN Roebuck??

There are 2 Annie E. Roebucks born Rotherham, 1903/4, one is Annie Eliza the other Annie Elizabeth!
Does your wife not know what surname Annie went under?

There is also a marriage in Beverley in 1925 for the same name although I suppose the one in Rotherham is more likely.

You will need the certificate to be sure.

I have a feeling that this is the correct Annie in the 1911 census given the name of her father and brother and the name of the child born in 1923:-

Did your Annie E. Roebuck go on to have another child? There is an Evans/Roebuck birth in Rotherham in 1938 who could be the son of the marriage in 1932.

If Annie was your wife's grandmother what was the name of your wife's parent (the one who was Annie's child) or was your wife's father the child born in 1923?

EDIT - through a process of elimination I am assuming that the child born in 1923 was your wife's father and your wife is called Kathryn - is this correct?

Wow ! Thanks for all your replies. Looking at the 1911 census it looks as though our Annie was Annie Elizabeth Roebuck b. 1905. Her father Ernest was a Methodist lay preacher. She had an illegitimate child Ernest b. Dec 1923 and gave him up to be raised firstly by his grandfather Ernest before, I believe, being put into some form of care.. He was later raised by his Uncle Ernest, Annie's brother. Anecdotally it is said Anni'es father threw her out to fend for herself; After that point I can find no trace of her,Whether she stayed in Rotherham or moved elsewhere is unknownm hence my request for help. So, it looks as though the Evans connection was a bit of a red herring after all.

Could this be Annie's death if she never married:-

Name: ROEBUCK, Annie E
Registration district: Staincross
County: Yorkshire
Year of registration: 1951
Quarter of registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Age at death: 47
Volume no: 2D
Page no: 755

If this is her then she didn't go far as Staincross is just north of Barnsley so not too far from Rotherham.

If you think this might be her you could buy this death certificate to see what address is given and you could perhaps then trace backwards through electoral registers to see where she had lived beforehand. It would also be interesting to see who the informant was.

I've just checked the 1911 census again and Ernest's wife Betsy is NOT Annie Elizabeth's mother. The image says that Ernest and Betsy have been married under one year, so she is Annie's step-mother.

It looks as though Ernest was Betsy's third husband. In the 1901 census she is Betsy Boyd, a widow living in Rotherham.

In the 1891 census she is Betsy Roberts, a widow living in Rotherham.

Hi Kath,

Thanks for your help. Yes, you're quite right Ernest Roebuck Snr did have 3 wives Betsy Boyd, Sarah Jane Hunter and Annie Elizabeth Dunstan. It's just driving me up the wall that I can't trace Annie after the birth of Ernest, my wife's Dad. Obviously, even worse is knowing we can't trace anyone on Ernest's Dad's side !

Regards

Hi Roger,

I've been away for a couple of days so just seen your last post. Have you checked out the death in 1951 that I posted as it could well be "your " Annie. I think it would be worth investing in the death certificate just in case it is "your" Annie as it might help.

Hi Kath,

Thanks for the reply. I too have been away a couple of days. Been to hospital for 1st cataract op so wasn't able to see much over last few days, (mind you I couldn't see so much before !!). Now my eye is on the mend I'll have a look into Annie from Staincross, though it makes you wonder if she only moved that far why she never kept in touch with young Ernest. An anecdotal rumour in the family,, which alas I can't now verify was that when she left home she went to London and was killed during the blitz, but I can find no evidence of this. Her father was a very strict Methodist lay preacher apparently and I wondered if maybe there was some clue in the Methodist archives. Unfortunately they are stored in the Rotherham local history archive which is closed at the moment while they relocate. Do you ever get the feeling the whole world is against you ?? Many thanks for your help.

Roger
