Hello again
I'm still trying to find Walter and Mary Ryan /Potter. If there was no marriage between Walter and Mary but she called herself Mrs Potter which name would be likely to appear on her death certificate? Would it depend on who registered the death or what?
Thank you,
Judie

Thank you for the information about a canvasser, on the one birth certificate it says canvasser ( clothing ) Hampstead, so that would make sense. I did wonder if they got married in Ireland because of Mary's surname Ryan but I was rather daunted by some of the Irish records. On the other hand maybe Ryan is her "original " married name, the plot thickens!

Hi Judie, it sooo frustrating when you get one like this. Not helped by the fact there is no marriage to be found - makes me wonder if that's why they're elusive, covering their tracks from previous spouses.

From what I understand, a canvasser is basically a door to door salesman.

Ah thank you I shall now go back to more detective work!

One of my relatives became elusive.

I had Phineas born in Walsall with wife and children in 1861.

There are additions to the family in the 1860s, they are with the parents on the census in 1881. One of the additions a son named Phineas born in the 60s.

By tracking Phineas's wife found her and all the children correct except 1, now Finn,, like his father Finn, who was born in Yorkshire! All DOBs the same as other censuses, wife and children all born Walsall.

Thought this was my family, then found out about Phineas's bankcrupcy, have a public notice for 1874.

I think this was an attempt to hide from his creditors to stop them tracing him through the census.

After the bankrupcy he was back to Phineas.

:-D

Good morning I am still trying to find Walter and I was wondering if there may be a good reason for not being able to find him and his wife, however as I am new to this I don't know what that might be, has any one got any ideas please?

Tell me about it! I have tried all sorts of different searches but I just can't find anything, so I am very grateful for all your help.

No, unfortunately I can't find them. I've just been up and down Church Row in 1928-1931 and Gayton Road in 1929-1932, but there are no Potters.

So must assume they were just lodging with someone.

This pair are very elusive.

At the time of the two boys born in London Walter was a canvasser ( I don't know what that is ) . The first address is Church Row Hampstead and the registration district is St Marylebone and the second address is Gayton Road Hampstead, registration district Hampstead. In Liverpool Walter was a dock labourer. Hope this helps!

Thank you Reggie,
His eldest son registered his death, and all the certificate says is that he was born on July 5th 1891 London. I can find no information about Mary. I did send for a death certificate for a Mary Catherine Potter who died in St Helens thinking I had found her, but she had been married to a John Potter so no luck there.

Can you tell me what Walter's occupation was at the time his children were born, please?

Also, the streets where the children from London were born. (for possible sightings on the electoral rolls).

Who registered the 1972 death?

If you don't have the cert.............it would be a worthwhile investment. Apart from anything else it will tell you where he was born (as far as was known to the informant)

BUT.....if he didn't marry the woman who bore his children, finding him may prove very tricky

Where and when was Mary born?

Judie

Judie Report 19 Sep 2012 11:21

Thank you but this is not my Walter as this one goes on to marry Daisy who is also at this address and then marries a Florence . This is the Walter who dies in London in the 1960s.

Wow thank you both for such quick replies and for welcoming me. I don't know that he did actually marry Mary as I can't find any evidence for it. On the birth certificates it does say Mary Catherine formerly Ryan. The four children were born as follows a boy born 1929 in London, another boy born in London 1931, a boy born in Liverpool 1934 and a girl Liverpool 1937. In London he was a general canvasser what ever that is and a dock labourer in Liverpool.

Hello Judie, and welcome to the boards.

Can you tell us the years of birth of the children (don't need to give their names as they may be still living)?

If there's no marriage to be found (haven't looked yet) one or other of them may have still been married to someone else.

There are trees on Ancestry that seem to have records for the two different Walters tangled up!

What was his occupation?

Please could someone help me? I am trying to find the birth and marriage of Walter Frank Potter and I see, to have hit a brick wall! According to his death certificate , he died in Liverpool in 1972, he was born on July 5th 1891 in London. The only Walter Frank Potter born that year ( in Greenwich ) is not the one I'm looking for as he died in the1960s in London. Walter had four children with a Mary Catherine nee Ryan . On three of their birth cerrificates that Mary registered she put the father as Frank Walter whereas on the certificate of the birth that Walter registered he put Walter Frank. I have tried contacting various people who share Walter in their trees and thank you to those who replied but unfortunately without success. Is anyone out there able to help thank you.
