Ellen Coles death
Deaths Mar 1949 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Coles Ellen 78 Gosport 6b 328
Probate record states died 31/12/1848, spinster of 57 Anns Hill Road, Gosport. Admin granted to James Hibbert Coles, fitter. £1322 18s 4d.
So that ties the 1911 census back to James's son!
Elizabeth Guley also died in Gosport, reg Q1/1949, but I can't see a probate record for her.

Is this one of your direct ancestors, because if it is I would be proud to have his as one of mine. Left in a poorhouse before he was 8, served all over the place and in the boer war, re-enlisted for WW1, survived and managed to see out WW2 before dying in 1948 aged 75-ish.
What a survivor!

If the 1871 posting by safc is right and it looks likely, I wonder why he only named Ellen, Walter & Lizzie as his NOK? I've tried to do a freebmd search of deaths to see if the rest of the family all died around the same time, but the search engine isn't co-operating. & wonder where Lizzie and Walter were in 1881 - although Lizzie could have been married by then, I can't see Walter.
Think Jonesey is right, Nellie is Ellen, my mum was always known as Nellie but she was born Eleanor.
Actually, re-reading Jonesey's post Lizzie probably wasn't married if he listed her under her maiden name when he enlisted.

According to his service records he served in the Boer War which would explain his absence from the 1901 census. He originally joined up on 13/8/1886 at Portsea. In 1891 about the time of the census he appears to have been in Preston. He served in Jersey, Ireland, Celyon, South Africa as well as in France/Belgium.
As next of kin he names his brother Walter and sisters Lizzie and Nellie (Ellen?).
Rather unusually a copy of his 1948 death certificate is amongst his service records as there was an outstanding amount of 2 shillings and seven pence due to him from his army pension. The registrar also claimed one shilling paid for the certificate.

I wonder? If he had 21 years previous service then he must have enlisted early, maybe this could explain it?

There is also an Ellen Coles listed, age 10, but I can't see any adult Coles.
Added, they've put N/K against James place of birth, but Ellen's states Gosport, Hants.

Hi
Can anyone help me tgrace census records for JAMES COLES b @ 1873, died 28/2/1948. I think he was born in Chorley Lancashire and on his marriage cert it shows his father to be GEORGE COLES (deceased at the time of the marriage) occ: farm labourer. JAMES married MARY ANN HEATHCOTE in Chorley Lancashire. But I can't find census returns for him.
Thanking you
