My sincere thanks to everyone that has responded, I am overwhelmed!

Family stories relate how a married couple Govanni Sansoni & wife Mary (she had been widowed. Her previous surnames were Farrell & Garrick) perished in a tram crash.
They supposedly left behind a young son. His name was Joseph or John. He was alledgedly adopted by a local Dr & his wife and taken to India.
It was said that he was allowed to keep his own name and not be changed to that of his adopted parents.

I did manage to get a marriage cert for Giovanni but have never been able to find death certs for them or birth cert for their son. I always assumed that as a sailor he left Cardiff and took his wife with him.

This of course would mean the tram crash was a story and this leaves me with a very very mysterious Anglo Indian Grandparent!!!

Searching for Giovanni Sansoni from Cardiff. He was a sailor and married Mary Ann Garrick, a widow in 1879. I have addresses of Sophia St and Frederick St Cardiff, late 1800s early 1900s. Trying to find any children of the marraige and where they went to. They seem to have disapeared from all records. Also Hope Sansoni born approx 1900 in Calcutta, India Would appreciate any clues. Maria could you give both their first names and birth years to try to find the year of death. Also her maiden name might be of use please.

How did you get back to them - was it through their descendants? It's jut it can be ueful to find ancestors when you know where their descendants are. The more info the better!

Added, incidently if you can't fnd a thing it's usualy because you are barking up the wrong tree somewere! Go back to basics and what you know and try tracing agian fron there. <3

Cant see anything relavent in the newspapers - surely if there was a tram crash with fatalities it would have made the news?

1872 A new newspaper, the South Wales Daily News, was launched.

A horse-drawn tram service was formally begun by Cardiff Tramway.

Castle Street was widened with the demolition of old buildings



1902 The last horse-drawn trams ceased to operate in the Town, and the first electric trams came into service with power provided by a new power station in Colchester Avenue, close to where Sainsbury's Superstore is now.

Did Cardiff have a tramway systen in the 1880s / 1890s?

Cardiff Corporation Tramways operated an electric tramway service in Cardiff between 1902 and 1950

Unless of course they were horse drawn?

Horse trams had run in the city from 1872 until 1904. The first tram route ran from High Street in the city centre to the Docks run by the Cardiff Tramway Company. In 1898, Cardiff County Borough Council obtained Parliamentary powers to take over all the tramways in the area and go ahead with the new electric trams, owning them from 1903

Have you search the local newspapers?

not seeing that name on any census for Cardiff, although Cardiff is/was very cosmopolitan owing to the docks

Have you searched for deaths in the area around that time?

I am trying to verify if there was a tram crash in Cardiff around these dates in which there were fatalities.
I am trying to find details of husband and wife on a tram who could have been killed. The name is Sansoni. I have tried everything but can't find a thing!
