Marriage certificate ordered - thanks for all your responses and have a great festive season.

I'll mark this as answered.

So the marriage to which you referred was that of a child......not a sibling. That makes a difference........

You quoted approx birth years in your original post............hence my question about the source(s) of the info

Hi Reggie,

I believe the father's occupation is shown on the marriage certificate, which was how I dentified that Alfred senior was a painter.

I have not identified where and when Alfred and Florence were born. That's what I am trying to establish, without any luck so far. I could hazard a guess that it was East London, but I have no proof.

As you say, I will have data on which to base informed searches when I have their marriage certificate. I also do not know with any certainty what Florence's middle name was; only that it began with M.

The Death record you posted above looks like a distinct possibility - I know that she lived in Poplar until her death in the early 1960's. I will record those details, but it still does not reveal her middle name.

Thanks for your responses.

How could a man's occupation be entered on the marriage cert of a sibling?

He could only have been a witness, and their occupations are not recorded

Please can you say where/how you found out when Alfred and Florence were born........

The names on the marriage record should be their correct given names.

When you receive their marriage cert, you will have data on which to base informed searches

Hi Gins,

I have no evidence of any connection with Ipswich, unless I can identify the Ipswich family moving to London, or perhaps Florence working in London's East end.

Thanks for searching and posting though. It's a possibility that I will follow-up.

Beau.

Thanks for your quick responses - I will place an order for the marriage certificate, although I doubt it will reach me until January due to the Christmas post :-(, so I will continue to research them in the meantime.

Is there anywhere that one can access or purchase the information that is on the marriage certificate, but not have a copy of the certificate itlsef?

The marriage cert would give you the names and occupations of their fathers (if known) and the witnesses could well be family members so also useful.

I would stronly suggest that you but this - it will cost £9.25 from GRO

Hi, welcome to the community boards

The marriage certificate should give you the names and occupations of the fathers.

Hello GR community,

This is my first post on the Boards - as I am struggling to identify the immediate ancestors of the following couple, and I wondered if you could point me in the right direction. I am a relative novice ;-) and I would like your advice...

Alfred Hadley b c1895 m Florence Chaplin b c1899
Married in West Ham, Essex in 1922 Q2 4a 767

They had the following children, all born in Poplar, London:
Alfred C J . . . . . 1924 Poplar Q2 1C 597
Florence Alice . . 1927 Poplar Q3 1C 506
Annie Aubrey . . .1929 (recorded incorrectly as Hadler) Poplar Q1 1C 503
Elizabeth Sarah . 1930 (though not listed as Florence's daughter) Q4 1C 476
Rose M A . . . . . 1933 Poplar Q3 1C 433
Ronald W . . . . . .1934 Poplar Q1 1C 485

However, I cannot identify the siblings and parents of Alfred and Florence. There are several Hadley families in the same area, with Alfred as a sibling, born around 1895, and there are several Chaplin families in the same area with Florence as a sibling around that time.

I have also considered that Alfred and Florence may not be their first names, but the names they were known by. Does the Marriage record generally have the full name?

I know that Alfred was recorded as a Painter in one of his siblings marriage certificates (the first one that I have purchased), and I am considering ordering Alfred and Florence's marriage certificate to get more information.

But I would like some tips on how to piece together the information that is out there and ascertain their real family lines.

I have looked at the 1901 and 1911 census records for both names, but because there are multiple families in the same areas, I have not had any concrete success. I also have to consider that they may not have grown up in the location that they later married and had their family.

I use GR, FreeBMD/REG/CEN, FamilySearch, Google and other sites, but I (currently) only have a sub for GR.

Any hints and tips would be most appreciated.

I would also like to wish you all a happy festive season :-), and thank you in advance for any assistance.
