welcome to the boards Patrick - now really, you're not giving away much info here now are you? remember, you know lots, we know nothing - how about a location for starters and tell us how you got back to these people - also, "please" encourages fellow members to give you a hand :-)

Certainly not me Ann!
According to the baptism of their son Nicholas Henry Nicholas senior was a mariner. So could have been born anywhere.

This is that baptism, what is unusual is that his birthdate is given as 15 July 1814:

London, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906
Name: Nicholas Henry Tonkin
Record Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 28 Jul 1833
Father's Name: Nicholas Tonkin - Mariner
Mother's Name: Charlotte Tonkin
Parish or Poor Law Union: Whitechapel St Mary
Borough: Tower Hamlets
Register Type: Parish Registers

Looks like he died young:

London, England, Non-conformist Registers, 1694-1921
Name: Nicholas Hery Tonkin
Birth Year: abt 1815
Event Type: Burial
Event Date: 18 Feb 1844
Age: 29
Church: Wycliffe Congregational Church
Burough: Tower Hamlets
County: Middlesex

Lived Greenfield Street.

Thanks for all these responses. Sorry for not adding more info.
As Astra indicated it is indeed the marriage of Nicholas Tonkin to Charlotte Folger at St Mary's Whitechapel on 13 April 1813. I've seen the original entry, the problems in trying to trace further back (naturally/of course!!) being;
1. No precise ages indicated for either party.
2. No parents indicated
3. Both simply stated to be "of this parish" (I suspect Cornish origins for Nicholas)
4. Additionally cannot find a death for Nicholas pre 1837 in Parish registers or post 1837, hence cannot find his dob, although there are a couple of possible Nicholas Tonkin christenings on Familysearch.org.

Oh yes Nicholas WAS indicated at Nicholas Henry's christening his (only?) son, to be a mariner!!

This is a brick wall I've struggled with for >10yrs!!!!!
