Find Ancestors

Trying to establish which of these two is the correct ancestor..

Evangeline Bennett died 1986 southampton dob april 1905
or
Evangeline Bennett died 1995 barnstaple dob nov 1904

can anyone help with informants so we can try to work out which one is the correct ancestor.

You will need to actually purchase copies of the death certs to know who the informants were.

Was this her married name?
Was she a direct-line ancestor?

Can you find your ancestor in 1911, by linking her to a family?
Her marriage cert. would show her father's name, which should hopefully help to find her correct birth, then a certificate would determine the actual birthdate, which could be matched against death registrations.

Hi Gwyn,

thanks for the advice. Evangeline Scobie married William L Bennett in 1927 exeter and had a son Robert S 1929 exeter, he seems to have married in Barnstaple where Evangeline died in 1995 so I had thought. However, her date of birth is one year off. Then found another Evangeline Bennett, she died in 1986 Southampton, date of birth is correct, and to cap it all, there is a Robert S Bennett marrying in Southampton in the 1950's...who could be the other Evangelines' son...talk about complex....guess we will have to buy death certs to find informants....

Thanks Andy, the correct one is Evangeline Scobie, but as per my message above, you can see how confusing this is to try and pinpoint the correct death..

Dates of birth on death registrations are only as good as the informant's knowledge and even with close relatives mistakes can happen.
Usually the day and month will be correct, but the year may be wrong.
I have a 1983 death certificate where the sister of the deceased, ( herself quite elderly) infomed that her brother was born 1909, when in fact it was 1908.

Deaths could be informed by a coroner or care-home worker and then you still wouldn't know which is which.
You need to establish a correct birth date using information from her marriage cert. to help you.

Any idea what her husbands full name was? Might be possible to find his death in same area.

As her birth was registered in the June quarter of 1905, she is unlikely to have a November birthday.
Of the 2, I would send for the death cert. from Southampton

This is speculation, you really need to obtain the certs.

yes, that is her birth which does match the death in Southampton. It is just that she was born, married and had a child all in Devon which is why I was leaning towards the death in Barnstaple in 1995, albeit the date of birth states 1904.

The 1904 doesn't matter so much as the month of November.

Births should be registered within 42 days, so to be registered in the June quarter of a year, she must have been born in THAT year,, probably between mid March and end of June.
