I have come across a coffin plate placed on the wall of the crypt of St. Clement Danes Church in London, and wondered how I might find further information about him.

He died on 24th January, 1826, and buried at St. Clement Danes.

Where do I go from here?

I guess you could start with the tracing of his life like we do with all people may lead you on to something more

Is there somewhere I can find him in a list of clergy in this time period such as Crockfords etc.?

Just wondering why he ended up at St. Clement Danes.

A tree on Ancestry has his as John Samuel Rawlinson, with that death date. Gives dob of 17/12/1795, marriage to Anne Hawkins 23/12/1823 but does not give locations or any evidence to back it up. Parents, according to the tree were Thomas (1751-1802 Yealand, Lancaster) and Sarah Cowell 1754 (Leeds, Kent) - 1798 (Lancaster)
Children John 1825-1825 & Thomas 1825 - ?

No idea if any of this is reliable though.

Crockford’s Clerical Directory was first published in 1858 by John Crockford, the son of a clergyman.

There may be something in that tree,

Thomas Rawlinson
Gender: Male
Christening Date: 28 Sep 1825
Christening Place: Brighton, Sussex, England
Father's Name: John Samuel Rawlinson
Mother's name: Anne Eliza

According to this he was the 3rd son of Thomas Hawkins, esq of Lancaster and Anne Eliza the only child of T Hawkins esq.

Edit: I've deleted the link as MC has posted the details from a newspaper report.

And the other child who died:

John William Rawlinson
Gender: Male
Christening Date: 28 Sep 1825
Christening Place: Brighton, Sussex, England
Father's Name: John Samuel Rawlinson
Mother's name: Anne Eliza

Think that link I posted has messed this page up a bit, sorry. :-S

Thanks MC, I'll delete the link I posted to bring the thread back to normal - it's the same report.

This seems to be a memorial to the son who died.
It's a maritime memorial, and everyone else on the memorial has the surname Austin.

According to the 1861 census, Anne Eliza married Horatio T Austin at some point after Rev R's death. No record of this on FreeBMD, so maybe they married abroad, as the Austin family were Royal Navy people.
In 1861 they were living at 33 Queens Gardens, Paddington, Marylebone -
Horatio T.Austin,
Anne E Austin,
Thomas Rawlinson stepson of Horatio, age 35 born Brighton;
Isabella Rawlinson, stepdaughter (actually Thomas's wife), born c.1835, Ireland;
Rathanie (Ruthanie?) Austin, daughter of Horatio, born c.1845, Brompton, Middlesex.
And 5 servants.

So far, I don't see them before 1861, nor do I see Horatio, Anne, or Ruthanie (sp?) on censuses after 1861.
Thomas & Isabella are in all censuses to 1891.Thomas died 08/06/1894, in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The only birth for Ruthanie (or similar) Austin in Middlessex between 1844 & 1846 is Rosehannah Austin, born 1845, St Pancras, but her parents seem to have been John & Jane.

Sir Horatio Thomas Austin, KCB, Vice-Admiral, died 16/11/1865. Widow was Dame Anne Eliza Austin.

All this doesn't help with Rev R's life history, though!

You may want to check out the parish for Yealand Conyers as it doesn't go back that far, but would come under another parent parish which should hold the records. Maybe Lancaster, but it is actually between Carnforth and Beetham, both of which have really old parish records.
