Hi, as far as I know, my William died in 1848 at the age of 71
William born 1777 and Sarah born 1779 had a daughter Betsy in 1806, died 1842,
Joseph Caldwell 1802 - 1878 at the bottom of your message was my great, great, great grandad
A lot of information regarding the Caldwells can be found on gravestones in Frodsham Cheshire
still not sure as to why there is a reference made to Massachusetts Town and Vital records

I think the surname could be a mistranscription of Olliffe.

There are several records on Ancestry for people supposedly called Ollippe, but when you look at the images, it's clear the name should be Olliffe.

However, this theory hasn't helped me find her birth!

Re Massachusetts, when you're searching for someone on Ancestry, and put in Cheshire as the place, the drop-down list of options includes "Cheshire, Berkshire, Massachusetts, USA".
Maybe someone has confused the two Cheshires???

Ancestry is also notorious for feeding you duff results!

Josephine

Josephine Report 23 Apr 2013 19:04

I think you have solved the mystery for me....the only doubts I have is that I cannot find a marriage for William and Sarah, or birth for Sarah. I know that the Caldwells had connections with the sea, hence me questionning the Massachusettes hint, there are some exact matches for Sarah Ollippe for passports/travelling so I will try and pursue these
thanks

Very new to this as you most probably realise, do you think I should do more research using Genes instead of ancestry to back up what i have found?

mgnv

mgnv Report 23 Apr 2013 19:32

I wouldn't say so - GR records tend to be more accurately transcribed, but their collections aren't as broad as Ancestry's.
What I would say is that it shows you should always check the original images against the transcriptions.
If you're expecting mistranscriptions may occur, then your search strategy should allow for that, like start with the idea it's not mistranscribed, and when you don't find your target, then try things like searching e.g., for a child of known age with their parents just using forenames, and maybe a county to cut down on hits, and checking all the hits, etc.

Hi Josephine, when you say you're getting exact matches in passports/travel is this what you're seeing?

73 exact matches in the Passport Applications 1851 - 1903

You can also get duff results on here as the start date for those records is after she died! Basically, which site you use depends on what you're researching as they all have their strengths and weaknesses. I have Ancestry Worldwide because many of my lot scattered themselves all over the place.

I've took a look on worldwide collections and I'm afraid no exact matches coming up for her.
