Julie Report 20 Jul 2019 16:16

Sarah Moulds lost her husband William Peatman in 1872, they had 10 children, the youngest born in 1871. I can ultimately trace what happened to them all, but I have been unable to find half of them on the 1881 census. The 5 I can trace are either married or live in servants. Those I cannot trace are - John Moulds Peatman b 1855; Thomas b 1857; Jesse Moulds b1862; Mary Elizabeth (known as Elizabeth) b 1868 & Ellen b1871 . Sarah had only one son, William b 1852, living with her in 1881. They were all born in Ropsley Lincolnshire. Where were they all in 1881?

Thanks Andrew this looks like it could be 1 down 4 to go. Little Ponton is not far away from Ropsley.

Andrew

Andrew Report 20 Jul 2019 16:34

Actually two down. Thomas is there as well.

Julie

Julie Report 20 Jul 2019 16:36

Actually I think it's 2 down as Thomas is also listed, granted their ages are both a bit out - but with servants that's not unusual.

Alviegal, I think you may be right about the Little Humby census being the missing one for John . I've been doing some digging and there is no John Peatman born around 1847 in Ropsley that would tie up with this census entry. In addition Little Humby is literally just down the road from Ropsley. There are other John Peatman's, including several who are part of the same general family, but their births were in other locations that sound nothing like Ropsley. Note to self to remember to spread the net a bit wider in terms of ages when struggling to find someone on a particular census.

That just leaves me with the issue of where Ellen & Mary Elizabeth were in 1881, someone must have been looking after them at 10 & 13 years old.

Julie

Julie Report 29 Jul 2019 22:55

I should have said born Ropsley or Somerby, the former being where he grew up, the latter where he was actually born.

Julie

Julie Report 29 Jul 2019 23:03

Having looked at scans of census document itself on more than one site, the age for John Peatman shown is 24 , not 34, so it is him with his place of birth recorded as where her grew up rather than where he was born.
