You need this website for Scottish records. There is a free search facility but you would then need to buy credits to look more in depth at records - 30 credits cost £7.50

https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

2 free search records show for a Jane Alexander McCutcheon 1916 +/- 2 years (they may be for the same person)

MCCUTCHEON
JANE ALEXANDER
F
1916
644/1 375
Bridgeton

MCCUTCHEON
JANE ALEXANDER
F
1916
644/8 317
St Rollox

6 credits would allow you to look at a copy of the birth certificate and download as the record is over 100 years old (75 years marriages, 50 years death. Otherwise you need to apply through the site for a copy of certificates (£12 I think)

You can then look for a marriage of her parents.

Unfortunately post 1855 when Civil Reg, began in Scotland you can't look for births using a Mother's maiden name like you can in England.

The 1911 census is only available through Scotland's People. Census prior to that are available as a transcript only through sites such as find My Past or Ancestry which helpers here will have access to, but you can only look at the originals for all their detail through SP

Her birth cert will tell you the names of her parents, and the date and place of their marriage.

When you find the parents' marriage cert, that will tell you the names of their parents - and so on.

Follow the steps backwards in time.

Information so far . James McCutcheon and Jane Alexander both born cicra 1881. Have their marriage cert details. From this found John McCutcheon (James father) married Sarah Major in Co, Down in 1867. Have found census from 1881 for John McNaughton wife and children living in Glasgow. Looks like moved to Glasgow sometime after the birth of their son David who was born around 1869 as other children born in Glasgow. Now the j=hunt for Johns parents begins.

1891 - lots of mistranscription going on here (on Ancestry) , it seems. I haven't looked at the original, but Ancestry seems to have lumped several different families together. I've just picked out the McCutcheons:

John McCutcheon
in the 1891 Scotland Census
Name: John McCutcheon
Age: 46
Estimated birth year: abt 1845
Relationship: Housemaid [ refers to someone else on Ancestry's transcription ]
Where born: Ireland
Registration Number: 644/1
Registration district: Bridgeton
Civil Parish: Glasgow Barony

In 1911, David is 12 years older than James. In 1881 and 1891 he's 7-8 years older. Ancestry's 1901 transcription makes him 5 years younger!
And James is 5 years older in 1901 than he is in 1911.
