Yvonne Report 20 Dec 2020 21:41

I have Henry Horton married to Mary Ann Blackburn. He was born about 1807 in Shropshire and baptised 25 Sept 1807 in Liverpool. He married Mary Ann in 1824 in Daresbury, Cheshire.
Searching for a death for Henry I saw a possible death for him on an Ancestry member's tree. She had a death for him in 1836, but said he died at sea on 29 July 1836 and was buried in Caernarvgenshire. on 2 August. I can't find any reference to his dying at sea and wondered if anyone had any clue where to find this. I've emailed the Ancestry member but heard nothing yet.

Thanks.

His burial location is on the coast, so a death at sea is entirely feasible-especially in view of the other burials mentioned by alviegal

Sorry, yes marriage was 1826 ... my typo!
No idea if he was a sailor but at the back of my mind I remember seeing one of his sons living in Wales ... I think it was William, I’ll have to check.

35 trees on Ancestry have Henry senior's death as 1838 in Warrington - which is clearly not correct.
As so often, they've all copied from each other without checking.

HORTON, HENRY 69
GRO Reference: 1838 J Quarter in WARRINGTON Volume 20 Page 653

Only two trees have the 1836 death, which does seem much more likely because of geography and occupation.

alviegal

alviegal Report 21 Dec 2020 13:38

One of the trees with the correct death has a photo of his gravestone which reads 'In Memory of Henry Horton of Runcorn who was unfortunately drowned July 29th 1836 aged 35 years.'

It is the Kay/Tupta tree.

Good morning. Thank you for all this info. It does indeed look like Henry was a mariner. I’ll have to look at this info but thanks so much, it’s so helpful.

Yvonne Report 20 Jan 2021 23:29

I've been going through all this information, and I'm not sure if my next question should be posted on this thread or a new thread. Anyway, here goes.
I took a look at the 1841 census posted above and notice that as well as the Hortons listed, there is also an Elizabeth Roberts age 20 and a John Roberts age 1, I'm guessing Elizabeth's son. Since Henry Horton & Mary Blackburn's daughter, Betsey, was married to a John Roberts I wonder if the Elizabeth and John might be related.
Thoughts??

ErikaH Report 21 Jan 2021 09:07

Simple way to check is to look at the GRO site for a birth for the boy. The MMN will be recorded

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

BUT, of course, there may not be a birth registration, as until 1875, as I'm sure you know, there were no penalties for not registering

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 21 Jan 2021 09:57

In view of the MMN, I though I'd post this................as you might have disregarded it

ROBERTS, JOHN BLACKBURN
GRO Reference: 1840 S Quarter in OF THE RUNCORN UNION Volume 19 Page 203

May be totally unconnected, of course....................

Elizabeth Roberts was NOT born in Cheshire, and no way of knowing if she had a husband

Thanks Erika. Not sure what to make of the John Roberts (mmn Blackburn) you posted. Betsey Horton did marry a John Roberts but that was in 1878 and their son, John, was born in 1859. I might just send for the certificate though just because of the coincidence of the name.

I think, though, that this might just be one of those things I have to let go!
