Susan Report 27 Jun 2022 15:30

She was born in 1899 in Aylesbury Bucks and married William Edward Palmer on 5/9/1921 at Aylesbury registery office. She had two sons Malcolm and Stan and a daughter Jean. I believe that she and Jean went to South Africa but am not sure of the date. This is my Grandmother whom I never knew and I have been trying for years to find information about her going to South Africa.
Does anybody have information on the family please?
Thanks

No one is likely to have any knowledge of them. Have you tried to see if Millicent is in anyones tree.

You’ve been looking for years. So it would be helpful to know where you have looked.

Did she leave the sons as children or as young men? Have you looked for them on the emigration/immigration records.

Ancestry SA did have telephone directories at one time.

For our reference -
Malcolm Edward born 1922,
Stanley William 1924,
Jean 1934

I don't see the birth of a Millicent Washington in Bucks in 1899 - or at any time.

Milicent is in a number of trees on Ancestry with about 3 totally different places of birth, slightly different years of birth but with the same father.

Have you checked and proved you are right about your version.?

Can't yet find Millicent and Jean in 1939.

Husband William E Palmer and Malcolm E Palmer born 1922, and Stanley W Palmer , born Dec 1923, living 29 Whitehill Lane, Gravesend.

William says he is married but no sign of Millicent or Jean.

Re the address on the passenger list in 1948,

43 Walton Way, Aylesbury,

in 1939, living at that address, amongst others , are John Matthews and wife Lorna Matthews born 7th April 1902.

Lorna Washington married Jack Matthews Sep 1929 Aylesbury 3a 3352

Lorna is living with Richard, Margaret, Millicent et al at Stone, Aylesbury in 1911, so she is Millicent's sister. Their father Richard is an asylum attendant in 1911.

So I'm sure the passenger list in 1948 is correct.

Not that it helps with what happened to Millicent and her daughter once they arrived in South Africa.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 27 Jun 2022 18:26

If Millicent and Jean both died in South Africa, they may still be closed records in 1939.

Malcolm is still a closed record on Ancestry, which often lags behind re 1939 Register, though open on FMP, as posted above.

That's true, AG, I realised because of her 1934 birth, and not having used the NHS, that would probably be true of Jean, but hoped as Millicent would be around 120 yrs old now, if she had lived, the powers that be might have decided she would actually be deceased and have an open record for her.

And Jean might still be alive, in her late 80s...

Unless someone supplies a death cert then the records won’t be opened from after the last update

Our brother moved to Spain and died there in 2001

His death isn’t online so his 1939 record will remain closed

Hi Shirley,

I just assumed they'd realise that a person born nearly 123 yrs ago was unlikely to be alive...

Seems I hoped in vain :-(
