Maybe a fresh pair of eyes will spot the death of James Cross.

I have all details of his wife and all their children, so please don't bother with any of that.

He was born approx 1816-19 in Newport Pagnell, per censuses.
(Because of the names of his children, I think he was possibly baptised 16/9/1815, son of Thomas and Sarah - but I'm only looking for his death.)

In 1838 he married Ann Holtom in Akeley, Bucks.
He's in all the censuses up to and including 1881, with Ann and various children:

Thomas 1840, Levi 1842, Robert 1847, Mary Elizabeth 1849, Jane 1850, William George 1855.
Three other daughters died in infancy and don't appear on censuses (Mary Anne 1844, Sarah Anne 1857, and Martha Ann 1859).

His wife Ann died in Kings Norton in 1884.

1881 is the last sighting of James.
He is NOT with any of his children in later censuses - please don't spend time researching that.

I assume James died between 1881 and 1891 - but can't find any record of it.

Also, I have all the children's birth records - except Robert 1847.

I'll be grateful if anyone can find James's death or Robert's birth.

How was Ann described on her death cert? (Wife, or widow)

"Wife of James Cross, labourer."

The informant was her daughter Jane.

Have you checked the AMJ 1847 birth in Buckingham of a Male Cross?

I’m guessing that you have, as you will have used the GRO……………

Apologies. My posts are results you will have seen and excluded etc etc and is information you will have most likely found for yourself. Given the amount of research you submit for others I felt compelled to try to help you as best I could.

Based on James' approx. YOB, and age in the 1881 Census, I found these Death results which are inconclusive.
I haven't researched any of them any further.
I accept none of them are in King's Norton or Worcestershire, where Ann died.

Many thanks for your efforts, ErikaH and Jink20.

I'm looking at James's death and Robert's birth as minor brick walls, about which I'm not worried enough to spend money at present, but I'll certainly consider all your suggestions, Jink.

Without having followed it up in any way so far, the Lambeth death might be a possibility, as James's son William (known by his middle name George) lived in various parts of London from somewhere between 1871 and 1881 onwards, employed in Black Rod's office at the House of Lords..

Other than that, I'll consider this thread closed.

James was a nephew of one of my gr-gr-gr-grandfathers..

I'm sure Robert would have been born in Akeley, as all his siblings were.

Robert’s birthplace is certainly given as Akeley on the census records I have seen - although FMP transcribes his forename as Roland on one of them. The image is not sufficiently clear for me to be able to submit a correction
