I can't see Alice after 1921.

Her mother remarried later in 1921, to Richard Joines.
Alice isn't with them (or anywhere that I can see) in 1939.

She is NOT the Alice Stanley who married Frederick Brown in 1933 - that woman was born 1910.

I'm 99.9% sure she's not any of the women of that name in Australia.

She's in 16 trees on Ancestry. None of the public ones suggest a death for her, except one in 1984 in Oxford - but that woman's DOB was 6 Feb 1909.

Puncture delayed them

Summoned for exceeding the speed limit with a motor-car in a built up area at Bridge Road Salisbury on Oct 22, Henry Dowber of High Street, Ditchling (Sussex) wrote stating that he was taking his brother back to barracks when they had a puncture. He was hurrying and forgot that the area was restricted.

Wow - thank you all very much!
I'd spent so long searching marriages and deaths, but missed that!

The 1939 register indicates that her surname was Gould at some stage.

The annotation relating to that name is NR230, which means a name change for a reason other than marriage or divorce.

Presumably she lived with a Gould at some time between 1939 and 1954, and used his name without being married to him.

Re "Conns Cottage" in 1939 - I see on Streetview that it's called Conds Cottage, at 30 High Street. Very picturesque - the middle house here:

Greyghost posted a report of Henry Dowber speeding in 1939.

Previous trouble:

Assize Action Settled

Sussex Assizes, at Lewes, on Monday, before Mr Justice Humphreys, an action was settled in which Miss Elsie May Harris, of the County Bridge Club, South Coast-road, Peacehaven, brought against Mr Henry Dowber, of Cour Cottage, Ditchling, and Messrs. Thomas Tilling, Ltd., Victoria Street. London, for damages for personal injuries, and, or, consequential damages sustained her in collision between a car driven by Mr Dowber, in which she was a passenger, and a motor omnibus Ltd,. . .
The accident occurred at the junction of Marine- drive Brighton, on July 3.

Geoffrey Lawrence, for the plaintiff, said a settlement had been reached by the payment by the defendants of an agreed sum to the plaintiff. Counsel asked for payment out court of £250, order for the taxation of the costs, and order for payment .£l0 paid into court for plaintiff’s security for costs. His Lordship agreed to the settlement.

ANOTHER DITCHLING CASE.
Mrs. Alice Dowber. of Cons Cottage. Ditchling, was summoned for a similar offence, at 8.15 p.m., on October 14th. P.C. Hayes was the informant in this case also, and said he was on duty in High Street when he saw a bright light coming from the window of defendant's hairdressing saloon. The light was causing a glow on to the road and on buildings opposite defendant's premises. Witness made inquiries and found that the trouble was due to defendant having placed an electric table lamp at the rear of the saloon. The light shone through an inner glass partition and through the outer window, both being uncurtained. He drew defendant's attention to the matter, and she said she went outside the premises earlier in the evening and everything then appeared to be all right. Witness added that he had previously warned defendant about the lights. Supt. Holloway said a police-sergeant had also warned defendant. Defendant, in a ... . . .

Yes, Henry's a mystery.
He seems to disappear altogether after 1939.

I wondered if he might have been born in America (going by the claim that his father was in NY), but couldn't find any Bernard Dowber (or other spelling) with a son named Henry.
I searched with surname Dauber, thinking that Dowber might be an Anglicisation.
However, it's all just speculation, with no result.

Yes, I agree the 1931 child could be his and Alice's.

Re 1911, I would be inclined to go with the hairdresser - based purely on occupation.
However, unless he is the same man with a double life in 1911, there's no sign of him anywhere else!

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 28 Mar 2025 16:35

17 Ancestry trees have Boleslaw and Dominika as his parents - but there's no proof that's the right man.

His birth is given variously as in Vilnius, London, or Germany.
Also Wisconsin, because people have picked the wrong Poplar from a dropdown list!
