That makes much more sense…………….

ArgyllGran Report 4 Apr 2026 20:53

In 1911, Robert and Mary Ann were in Inverbervie with children Robert 7; Helen H 1; Maggie 5; Rachel 4; David L 2;.

In 1921, they were in Inverbervie, with children David 12, Helen11, Rachel 14, Robert 17, Annie 7, Lizzie 4, Maggie 15, William 2, James 0.

From an age point of view, it seems much more likely that one of those sons was the father of Ruth and Robert Burns - but without the birth certs, there's no way of knowing.

Rebecca

Rebecca Report 4 Apr 2026 20:43

Apologies I must of missed the marriages. You are right it does seem very unlikely that their parents where married in 1905.

Rebecca

Hopefully Roberts daughter will.gey back to me, she will details.

Thankyou again for your help.

ArgyllGran Report 4 Apr 2026 20:31

I posted Robert Balneave Fotheringham's birth at 17:06.
His mother's name was Smith.

His parents' marriage:

FOTHERINGHAM, WILLIAM
SMITH, MARGARET
1873
267 / 7
St Cyrus

All the births, marriages and deaths which I've posted on this thread are from Scotlands People.

BUT -

As has been said several times, you need to get a copy of either Robert Burns or Ruth's birth certs, to be sure of their parents' names.
You can buy them through the SP website for £12 each.

It seems unlikely that the parents of children born in 1935 and 1936 would have married in 1905.

Perhaps they were the grandparents, rather than the parents - just a suggestion.

I'm not sure that is the family you are looking for. You really need to get a birth certificate for Robert Burns or for Ruth.

Rebecca

Fantastic I will search for the tree and have a look.

Do you think Balneaves is the maiden name of his mother?

ErikaH Report 4 Apr 2026 17:57

The birth certificate for Robert Burns Fotheringham, will give you factual info - well worth investing in it.

You could also look at Scotlands People website for info……..free to search, with detailed info being available through paid-for credits

Rebecca

Rebecca Report 4 Apr 2026 17:51

The information is from my husband's Dad son of Robert burns Fotheringham.

I am trying to get more information from Robert Burns daughter but she's hasn't replied to me yet unfortunately.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 4 Apr 2026 17:34

What is the source of your info…..do you have any documents to prove it?

If, as you say, Mary Legg was born in 1899, she can’t be the woman who married in 1905

There is no record on 1901 census for a Mary Legg matching your info in Scotland….and NO Mary Legg of ANY age in Dundee.

BTW, every man who served in WW1 was awarded the three standard medals. Known as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred

Rebecca

Rebecca Report 4 Apr 2026 17:29

Wow thankyou for the census information and war information. Won medals too.

The 1935 and 1936 birth certs of Robert and Ruth will tell you their parents' names, and the date and place of their marriage.
