I've hit a brick wall trying to find out about William Waterson, born 1858 in Canterbury. He was a private in the 4th Hussars and deserted December 1880. He doesn't appear in either the 1881 or the 1901 censuses, although according to information originating from an enigmatic 'Mrs Muret' living in Hounslow in 1980, his whereabouts were known as late as 1910. I have tried to trace 'Mrs Muret' but had no joy, and the person who originally collected the information has subsequently died. Does any of this ring any bells with anybody? There's a good story behind it I can assure you!
