Brays of Holmfirth (from a book in Huddersfield library) The name Bray is closely linked to wooldale and cartworth areas for 700 years 1309-Adam le Bray pays sixpence at manor court for trespassing in Littlewood and cartworth 1379- John Braie and his wife among people taxed at Holmfirth From 1540 - Brays frequent in Kirkburton By 17th century Brays in every township in parish. Main home wooldale 1709- Wakefield manor survey lists numerous Brays in and around wooldale. Most interesting - Phillip Bray, a juror at Manor court and tenant of numerous pieces of land. He and his grandson (also Phillip) made provisions in their wills for money to be paid for the poor of Hepworth and Fulstone thereby establishing what has since been known as 'brays charity'
