James Garrick was born somewhere in Scotland, possibly Orkney, in about 1813. He married Margaret and they had a child James. Sometime later they had another son, Andrew, born in Sunderland and eventually John and Ellen who were born in Hartlepool. The births records of the children are elusive, but approximate ages and places of birth are given in various censuses. James was a sailor, and became master of the ship Eliza Kirkbride, built in Stockton on Tees and registered in Hartlepool in 1845. He was previously mate of that ship, and may have travelled to Hartlepool on an earlier ship as a seaman. |
