The surname Coasby was probably originally spelt Cosby. That name comes from a small Village near Leicester marking the eastern boundary of Viking settlements in England. It is Scandinavian derivation meaning the place where Cos lived. It could have been a farm or small settlement.I have found approximately twenty variations of spelling of this name. It was never a big family, I have found clusters who lived in London and Ringwood in Hampshire. My direct ancestors came from Ringwood and were mostly small traders, peasants or artisans. That Family group had disappeared by the beginning of the twentith century, either moving away, having only female descendants, or no children at all. Roger Coasby 3/7/03 |
