George Slade (c1802-1886) was born in Powerstock, Dorset and then must have moved to the Isle of Wight at some stage. He appears on the 1851 census in Cowes with a wife (Eliza) and six children (William(25), George(22), James(17), Elizabeth(14), John(9) and Jane(6)). His wife and all the children were born on the Island so I guess he must have arrived before 1825. I think pretty much all the Cowes and East Cowes Slades descend from this family. In particular John had about 13 children! He set up as a butcher in East Cowes. I'd love to hear from anyone with connections to this family, or to Slades in the Powerstock area. The 1901 census has a John Slade(56) from Nettlecomb(e) in Dorset. As this is the neighbouring village to Powerstock I feel sure that he must be related to George (and thus the other Cowes Slades).
