Taken from Newspaper cutting for WW2:- Award D.S.O To Maj. Don Learmont Of North Novies OTTAWA, Oct 2 - (CP) - Defence Headquarters announced today the award of the Distinguished Service Order to Maj. Donald Learmont of Truro, N. S., for his leadership and devotion to duty during the two-day battle in the drive for Carpiquet airfield after D-Day last year. Maj. Learmont, with the vanguard of the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, had broken through to within a half-mile of the airfield when his command was attacked by 10 tanks and a battallion of motorized infantry and his position was outflanked. He clung to his position and, although himself taken prisoner, his leadership so imbued his troops that they held their position until over-run. The remainder of the regiment consolidated its position and inflicted heavy losses to the enemy. Maj. Learmont's wife is serving with the 9th Canadian General Hospital, R.C.A.M.C. overseas. His mother, Mrs Francis R Learmont, lives at 71 Smith Avenue, Truro. |
