The authors of "A Dictionary of Surnames", Hanks & Hodges state that the surname is English of unknown origin; possibly a variant of Black/Blake/Blogg with alteration of the vowel. They continue, "The name is largely confined to the Midlands, and seems to have originated in SW Shrops. It is first found at Wistanstow, Shrops., in the 13th cent. in the form Blyke. By the mid-15th cent. it had taken the form Bluck, with occasional variations such as Blooke and Blowke." p.58.
