Hemsted was originally Hemstedt as my ancestors are German. During the first world war the t was taken off as my great uncle (think thats right) had moved to England and was fighting on the side of the British. The t was removed so in case of him being captured the British wouldn't think he was German and the German's wouldn't think he was a traitor. After the war the t was never reinstated so hence the current spelling of our surname. |
