Hello Olwen I am also trying to trace my Rylands family in Lancs at the moment (up to 1845). Mine were spelt Rylands on 1901 & 1891 but Rylance on the 1881 census. I was told that the numerator spelt the name as he heard it - as it was unlikely in early times that people could spell their name. Hope we may find a connection. Origins of Rylands name http://genforum.genealogy.com/rylands/messages/21.html Replied to your message - it wiped it out first time but should be OK will see what else I can find. |
