Chris Hancox Christopher F Hancox Clent, Worcestershire, UK. chrishancox (at)clent14.fsnet.co.uk. My possible ancestors The volumes of the Worcestershire Historical Society in the library of University of Wolverhampton, (when that was on the Dudley campus) compiled by John Amphlett show that in the Index of Wills at Worcester Cathedral (1560 to 1581) the following references to Hancox appear: 1560 Hancox Annes, Wydow, Wychebolde, Doderhyll (Dodderhill Manor is situated between Bromsgrove and Droitwich near Wichbold). 1563 Hancox Elizabeth, Grafton. (West of Rock Hill, Bromsgrove) 1564 Hancox William, Brailes. (East of Shipston on Stour near Tredington) 1560 Hancoxe Lawrence (no place shown) 1571 Hancox Elizabeth, Bromsgrove. Appears to have died on the same day, 25th Jan as Thomas:- 1571 Hancox Thomas, Bromsgrove. 1572 Hancox Elizabeth, Bromsgrove 1581 Hancocks John, Husbandman, Newbold, Tredington. 1581 Hancox Thomas and Tombes, Elizabeth (I don’t know if these were associated because of being family members or if thej just were entered on the same day) Tredington. Also there was a William Hancoxe in Wichebold on 11 Mar 1547 Also held amongst the publications of the Worcs Historical Soc. records of the old order book of Hartlebury Grammar School,(Worcestershire, England) 1556 to 1752: At a meeting of the Governors of the Free Grammar School of Queen Elizabeth in Hartlebury, Wed Feb 14th 1699, it was agreed and ordered that 20 shillings be paid to Mr Hancocks (spelt Hancox in other places in the records) the Usher of the school since 1688. His salary on 10/02/1702 was shown as ten pounds and in 1715 it is shown as having risen to 12 pounds. A footnote says that : “He died in 1723 having been Usher of the school for 35 years and having served under 5 headmasters and never having received more than £14.00.00 per year.” My father, Leslie, was born in Clent in 1913 and died in 1991, and his brother Kenneth died many years before. However, my uncle Arthur still lives in, Clent and is 80 years old this week (as at 12/06/03). We have lived here for a number of generations. My grandfather was Charles Hancox. He was born in Clent and died in 1954. I believe we had relatives in the west Midlands who spelt their name Hancocks, and a relative some generations back went to America. Best wishes to all Hancoxes Chris
