The name appears to be Scottish in origin, although this is not certain. However, it is a very uncommon name yet the only country in the world with more than a 'scattering' of Stanners's, is Scotland! The archivist in Perth Library has confirmed that the name comes from stones, shingle, gravel. Stones were called stanes, in the east and north east of Scotland. There is a Stannergate in Dundee, evidently built on shingle. Stanners Island in the Tay out in front of the Scone Palace estate is like others in fast flowing rivers, stones, shingle and sand.
