Hi, the name of Meekums is said to originate in the Netherlands. The family story goes that my (paternal) great-grandfather was a nobleman who was sent to England to get a good education and escape the family's habit of gambling. he promptly gambled away the family fortunes ... another myth is on my father's mother's side. She is said to be the great grand-daughter of an Indian Princess, sold into slavery during the British Raj. She and one Captain Clare are said to have given birth to a daughter who married a chap named Cook, and they had a daughter who married a Cockroft. That was my father's grandma cockroft, who wore a trilby and smoked a hookah in the 1920's - and gave birth to the woman who married Thomas Cornelius Meekums, my Dad's dad. G'ma Cockfroft is said also to be related to the wing of the family that spawned the great Sir John Cockroft, who of course later split the atom.
