Hello, My name is Martin Postlethwaite. The information I have is that the name originated in the area now known as Cumbria (initially around Barrow-in-Furness)in the 12th century. The 'thwaite' bit means a clearing in a wood, and apparently the 'Postle' bit is because our relatives used to dress up as Apostles at religious festivals, particulary Michaelmas (29th September.) The telephone directory in Keswick (Lake District) has over 60 Postlethwaites, and would be a good place to start delving.....! |
