After my Gramp died (Stephen) my dad discovered that Wilhelm Eels came over from the Black Forest (now Germany of course) in 1712 and settled in Castle Cary/ Castle Combe area. He worked as a game keeper to the Lord of the manor but tragically died in a riding accident. The Eels's have been in the south west of England ever since. There is also a "curse" on all Williams - one was murdered by a highwayman(!), one was banished by the inhabitants of Castle Cary as he was a good for nothing scoundrel (and subsequently set his own curse on the castle - a plaque is still there today) so don't name any babies by that name if you are an Eels!!! |
