I am trying to find out more information on the history of the name McElrue. It appears to be almost unique to the branch of the family which arrived in County Durham from Ireland c1867 and is an anglicised version of a Gaelic name - possibly Mac Giolla Rua. I am also aware that it was recorded as McEnroe in records in Co. Cavan, Ireland I have traced our family link back as far as possible in England and need to know more before being able to trace further information in Ireland. Anyone know anything?
