The Bennisons of Tooley Street, Queen Elizabeth Street and other roads in Bermondsey (SE London) ran some small shops in the area in the mid 20th century and before. Ernest lived in Tooley Street, and had several brothers. He worked in the various docks and wharves along the river, including the Royal Docks. He had a daughter Barbara, and during and after the war he lived in Devon Mansions in that road, and did fire-watching duties from the roof of one of those blocks during the blitz. One of the Bennison shops is still there in Tooley Street - boarded up, awaiting its fate as that end of the road undergoes almost total redevelopment (including the new GLA building and Hilton Hotel). |
