Some ideas of the origin of the name Banks. Possibly a location name - living by a hill, slope or river. Possibly from the Middle English "Banke". There are early records of : Walter del Banke, 1297 Yorkshire Matthew Banke 1327 Suffolk Nicholaus del Banke 1379 Yorkshire Richard del Bank 1292 Lancashire Simon Bancke of Cumberland was at Oxford University in 1596 and William Banks of Devon was there in 1597. The form may also conceal an earlier " hous" as in William Bankhous 1482, or Robert Bancus 1513. Sir Joseph Banks of Revesby Abbey ,Lincolnshire was created Baronet in 1781.Knight of the Bath and President of the Royal Society. Thomas Banks , a sculptor is buried in Westminster Abbey.
