My branch of the Hird family stems from Arkengathdale in North Yorkshire, to the north of Richmond. Apparently this was a lead-mining area 150 years ago, and those suffering from lead poisoning were sent to the Durham coal fields in the belief that mining coal would make them cough the poison out. If you go to Richmond and the surrounding villages you will find several shops and businesses in the Hird name. |
