I have heard two explanations for the origins of the Denyer name: 1) It has been suggested that Denyer is a Huguenot name and that they fled France in the 16th/17th centuries. They came across in small boats, reached the South Coast and here they stayed. That would explain the proliferation of Denyers in West Sussex for there is a very strong belt of them ranging from Brighton in East Sussex to Stroud, a small hamlet outside Petersfield just over the border in Hampshire. They appeared to have been mostly yeoman farmers although in Brighton several were Builders and Undertakers. Some apparently reached the big city for in London there is, in the borough of Chelsea, a Denyer street, full of warehouses. 2) The surname Denyer is a locational name of English origin 'The Denyer - one who lived in the dean or den, the Y is intrusive. Variants include: Dener, Denner, Dayner,Deynour,Denne. Early instance: Matilda Denyer, Poll Tax, Yorkshire cira 1379. There is a coat of Arms which is a Blue Shield with a tree standing on a green triple mound with two red rose gules, one on either side. |
