VARLEY;this may be a southern form of farleigh.Thomas de Varley 1316. Both Varley and Varlays (Devon)Earlier Fernleigh gave rise to surnames in the 14th century. The surname cannot derive as been from virley (essex)which is not so called before 16th century it was originally from its domesday Lord Robert de virley 1275. (AS QUOTED FROM A LIBRARY BOOK OF ORIGINS OF SURNAMES)Does anyone living in Hull remember Thorton VARLEYS the large department store in the city centre, im showing my age now. |
