I also used to subscribe to the Yorkshire origin theory (Jump near Barnsley), but there is no evidence of any Jumps in Yorkshire in the Family Records Centre indexes around the mid-19th century. Over 90% are from the North West. There are Jumps in the North Meols area (now Southport) since 1381 (from Poll Tax Records - see 'North Meols and Southport' by Peter Aughton). I like to think this means we were originally Vikings landed in the 9th century. It's not a big migration from there to Ormskirk, West Derby, Liverpool, and beyond. |
