ORBELL, LETT, SCULLY & WARNER I am interested in making contact with anyone named Orbell, Lett, Scully or Warner. I have an adopted brother, Victor, and a sister named Rosemary. My parents were Charles and Mary Orbell (nee Lett). My maternal and paternal grandparents were Frederick & Mary Lett (nee Scully) and Charles & Elizabeth Rosetta Orbell (nee Warner) respectively. My parents were born and raised in Bermondsey. My mother’s parents owned and ran a pub and a small shop in the area, although her father was also a Thames Lighterman. His father won the Doggetts Coat & Badge race in 1844. My paternal grandfather, Charles William Orbell, was the manager of a leather factory. He had a brother named George and sisters named Nell & Lizzie. They and their families moved to Bournemouth. My father had a cousin named Kit Coward whom I remember visiting in Bournemouth when I was about 10 years old. Aunt Kit had 2 sons, one of whom was called Brian I believe. My mother had brothers named Fred, Henry (Bill), John and Edward (Ted). Her sisters were Lal, Louisa (Lou), and Florence. On my mother’s side of the family, I had cousins named Rusty, Ernie, Johnny, Jimmy, Joe, John and Babs. Several of Mum’s brothers worked in the London Docks and the whole family lived and worked in or around Bermondsey until and during WW2. For part of the war, some of the family evacuated to Hurstpierpoint in Sussex, where I was born in 1944. After the war the family became more spread out – we moved to Croydon, Lou to Coulsdon, Rusty to Greece and Ted emigrated to Australia. Increasingly, over the years, as the family became more spread out, contact between family members became less frequent and eventually was mostly reduced to weddings and funerals! I know I have lots of cousins and second cousins out there and would love to catch up with anyone who thinks they may be related to me. |
