WHITFIELD. Many people who have the name Whitfield can trace their ancestral line back to tiny village of WHITFIELD in Northumberland England. It was the custom that if you own the estate you took the name as your surname. The Whitfield family held the estate and hall until 1750 when it was purchased from them mainly to settle debts. Around 1364 John de Whitfield was granted the estate by Hexham Abbey in exchange for a very small yearly rent A Countess of Scotland had two sons both became kings of Scotland. One of them had a Northumbrian wife who brought the estate with her as a dowry . Legend tells how the Countess wanted to give the estate to Johns father in exchange for pepper that had brought back from "The Crusades.". (probably purchased in the Greek Islands of RHODES or SYMI). John de Whitfields father was reputed to be a Cannon in Hexham Abbey he said to make a profit by something brought back from a crusade was wrong so he gave her some pepper and she gave the Estate to the Abbey.
